Why It Matters

Good Mulching Does More Than Look Nice

Mulch serves multiple functions beyond aesthetics. It retains soil moisture. which is critical in Central Jersey's hot, dry summers. suppresses weed growth, regulates soil temperature, and gradually breaks down to improve soil structure. Done right, it reduces your overall maintenance needs for the season.

Most homeowners make the same mistake: adding new mulch on top of old without cleaning and edging the beds first. The result is uneven depth, messy edges, and beds that look worse than before. Our process starts with cleanup and edging so the final result looks intentional and professional.

We also help you avoid the "mulch volcano" problem. piling mulch against tree trunks and plant stems. which damages and can kill otherwise healthy plants. Proper mulching keeps roots healthy, not just curb appeal high.

Common Questions

Mulching FAQ

How often should I replace mulch?+
Most organic mulches (hardwood, shredded bark) break down and should be refreshed annually or every other year depending on depth and conditions. In Central Jersey & PA, an annual spring refresh keeps beds looking their best and maintains the 2-3 inch depth recommended for optimal weed suppression and moisture retention.
What type of mulch is best for NJ?+
Double-shredded hardwood mulch is the most popular choice for Central Jersey & PA residential properties. it stays in place, breaks down slowly, and looks clean. Pine bark nuggets are good for acid-loving plants. For areas with heavy runoff, shredded wood mulch stays put better than nuggets. We'll recommend the right type for your specific beds.
How deep should mulch be?+
The ideal mulch depth is 2-3 inches for most garden beds. Too shallow and you lose the weed suppression and moisture retention benefits. Too deep (over 4 inches) and you risk smothering roots and creating overly anaerobic conditions. Keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to avoid rot.
Does mulch prevent weeds?+
Yes. a proper layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, preventing most weed seeds from germinating. It won't eliminate all weeds (especially if seeds blow in from outside), but it dramatically reduces the amount of hand-weeding required. Combined with a weed barrier or pre-emergent application, it's highly effective.
Do you install landscape fabric?+
Yes, we can install landscape fabric (weed barrier) beneath the mulch in appropriate situations. However, we'll advise you honestly. fabric is not always the best choice for planted beds, as it can restrict the natural improvement of soil over time and eventually become a maintenance issue as plants grow. We'll recommend what makes the most sense for your specific beds.
